Why did MMOs die when live service, in-app purchases are so popular? Seems like a perfect recipe.

MMOs were just chatrooms with added gameplay features for nerds. now that the internet is mostly filled with terminally online creatures who cannot talk like normal people, all chatrooms have rotten and died.

I jumped into a new MMO and I love it so far. I think most people are just losers that Google whatever is most popular and play it, or be a contrarion and choose the 2nd most popular, to argue with people about the most popular. Then they're dug into the game and don't wanna try anything else, because why waste your time having fun, when you can level up or gear up that first game?

people think they have control over microtransactions and can stop buying them at any time (lol) whereas a monthly subscription seems forced and "too much" to them

MMO didn't die, the RPG aspect of it did. Everything is MMO now, everything even your offline games because it requires constant connection to play them.

Fuck MMOs, someone should make a spiritual successor to NWN
If you released paid content updates every 4-6 months, you could make a lot of money

WoW was the only MMORPG that achieved mainstream popularity. Since then the genre has been held to an unreasonable standard that not even WoW itself can meet anymore.
MMORPGs are back to their former glory. Online games for actual losers. If you think MMORPGs are dead, you are not a real MMORPG player. You are a casual and part of the problem you complain about.
