The tl;dr is that he was just amelie's pawn as much as sam was. By the end of the first game he's stuck on the beach with no way out. We can still find his most recent journal entries that he wrote some time after losing the good old fashioned boss fight on the beach

I took metals to the road paver before taking the pizza to him and the metal was holding the pizza up so it auto sorted it onto its side and I tossed it off into the rock field while it was flashing at me. I wish the pack sorting was a bit deeper and sort of like a Tetris minigame.

You can have a more "in depth" sorting when opening the menu as there's a bunch of cargo around you, but yes it remains pretty basic, it's more of a jenga sorting. I never used the autosort feature because my autism enjoys manually sorting cargo on sam's back
