You can also summon spirit wolves, and with some mods, tame them.
I think ordinator (the skill perks mod) adds that option to some tree or another.

You can save a wolf in re4 sadly its just help you in a boss fight and then leave

RDR2 has some hd wolves with some rare depictions of wolf behavior and that TheHunter CotW has a new update with better looking wolves but then again I don't know if they really do anything except patrol around with the sole purpose of getting shot.
