Because they stop supporting older hardware and you need the new thing that is supported in order to play horribly un-optimized software.

It really bothers me that World of Warcraft, a game launched in 2004, can't show npcs and players more than 100 yards away. why the fuck can't I see people miles away when the servers have orders of magnitude more performance?
