The anime is not a problem when it´s well done though. Ni no Kuni and DQ XI are great. Heck, even Tales of Arise and Granblue fantasy totally work. Not to mention the Nier games.

Besides Expedition is clearly influenced by JRPGs like Shadow Heats and Folklore at the very least. It´s beautiful and a great game, but not quite as unique as some try to make it out to be.

It was a pun. I understand your logic and believe it or not i´m even inclined to share it however it is undeniable lines have been progressively being blurred for a while now.

Lots of JRPGs have, in an attempt to appeal to international markets, embraced traditional WRPG traits like open worlds, menial side quests and action oriented combat systems progressively compromising their identities. Games like Dragon´s dogma or even FF XVI are clearly more akin to WRPGs or ARPGs than older entries.

Or, consider the following, international western streaming services are commissioning famous studios to produce "anime" for them. Yes, it is being done in japan and even by japanese teams BUT a there are strong editorial elements concerning themes, plots and culture that make these products not feel japanese at all. For example that suicide squad isekai anime.

When cultural identity is compromised like that it becomes trickier to define what is a JRPG and what is a WRPG. Expedition 33 may not fully be a JRPG but it´s clearly inspired by JRPGs. If anything it has far more in common with JRPGs than it has with stuff like Baldur´s Gate or Dragon Age.

I like JRPGS. Expedition 33 looks alright, but I don't exactly like the art style. It's not the fact that it isn't anime or something; I just feel like the overall aesthetic of the world is a tad bland. It's like the western equivalent to modern JRPG games in that it's art style is sort of just generic. Perhaps I'm seeing something others aren't though.
