The item is just there to put a stop check on first. If someone is doing TOO good they're uncatchable on most tracks a red shell might not even catch them from fsr enough away due to awkward homing angles and limitations in its AI.
At this point there are multiple ways to counter it too.
It's there for a shake up. That's all. Last place gets it because they benefit the least, that's it. It would be stupid to give someone in 2nd or 3rd some auto win kryptonite item that kills 1st with a 100% success rate in most circumstances.

I just play to have fun, I like the number goes up but I know I'm not going to be in 1st every single time.

If there are items its an RNG item fest where what you get from the box is the sole reason you win. If its more focus on skill then its essentially just a time trial with other people at the same time which defeats the purpose of it being MP at all.

Blue shells are necessary, although I wish they were balanced a bit better. The problem with mario kart items is that most of the choas is happenning behind the person in first, so once a person reaches first they only get further and further ahead because everyone else is getting fucked by the each others items. Blue shells are a way to bring the choas to the person in first so that they can't build an unfair lead.

The problem is that they are bullshit when the 1st playet is still near everyone else. I feel like they should be rebalanced somehow to avoid this.
