I've done sword+shield and longsword vs spear in hema and there's absolutely no middleground in that scenario when people are taking it seriously and going full speed. Either you get stabbed as soon as you're in the spear's range or you manage to close distance and bind the spear, at which point the spear user is fucked, though the latter is rarer than the former. Like I said, doesn't work well, you're not going to be able to move fast enough to avoid the spear after it's started moving. The best thing to do is to try and bind the spear and close distance but that's also kind of a crapshoot, just less of one.

Even in countries where you aren't allowed to own any sort of weapon specifically designed for self defense, if you end up using this to bash a thief's head in a judge could argue that even though it's set up as a table, it's clearly made and advertised as a weapon so you'd still get charged.
