2 is perfect.
1 was impressive for it's time.
Homecoming had it's moments, good try at reality or people being something. Too much. There is a lot of that, the too muchness to life. And the ending was bad in that it wasn't happy ever after. But seemed honest for me at the time. Wrong winning, but not victorious, or wrong established outside, but not inside. The guy you play as a person. The outside monsters. Going into hell. As soldiers do. Was a loop. But with memories maybe there was an escape. Maybe the memories meant enough to him that the same escape and return was worth it. Being young in that world. Like the past wasn't far away.
Love interest takes more importance in my life, story ended early, long story. And ironically neglected though kept in focus most of the time. Reason to go on. Heaven already known as man an woman, once water and being able to turn over was an extreme that seemed ungrrateful to move from. Hard chose love over water and food later. Stories and stories.

Something familiar in Homecoming, like the option to live was there, rejected.

i found it too linear and too on-the-nose. i realized I was playing as Heather and just knew it would be all about pregnancy and rape. it pretty much was for the whole thing through, and Claudia comes in and says "YOu'll birth a God!" and that was it, the mystery was gone. Heather was kinda annoying at times, but it's been some time since i last played it, so maybe I just remember the worst parts. 4, despite it's issues, was more experimental and novel at times, but I really appreciate being stuck in someone elses' nightmare and the apartment itself added a lot of charm. i mean, there isn't much to say about either
its roughly the same between all of them. the levels in 3 I thought were too linear, you don't even get to Silent Hill until half way? something like that. And finding guns laying around kinda took me out of it. There are good levels in each Silent Hill game, even fucking Downpour, but it's still a small section
least favourite part of 3 was the running section down the corridor as a red light chased after you, and you just run into the wall every time the camera switches. really highlights where tank controls dont feel all too good. they could've had it so the camera smoothly shifts. they had that kinda power back in SH1

For me, it's the first 10 minutes in Alchemilla. The way the game builds the tension is just pristine.

First there's no music at all, and you meet Kaufmann and all that. It's kind of comfy even, after running around in the town and being just done with the school. It's just your footsteps.

Then it stops being comfy because it's too quiet for too long. After that you realise that there's no power, and when you go to the basement and start the generator, the noise it makes becomes the ambient music, and everything is still dark down there. It feels awful. Then there's the elevator shenanigans.

It's just layer after layer of carefully crafted exploration and mystery.

I think the way items are scattered throughout is very good (SH1 is really good at item placement). The tension of an enemy that doesn't register on the radio is incredible. The sewer monsters being able to attack from above and being so unpredictable is really scary. The music is eerie and puts you on edge with what sounds like the monsters calling out to each other through the sewer. The mad dash for the exit after you find the key in the bloodsoaked water and you are ambushed by the dozens of monsters is horrifying and makes me feel so tense and scared to this day. I think it is the scariest area in the game. Even though there isn't much to explore like in Silent Hill's other best levels, it still has great gameplay due to the tension created by the sewer monster gimmick. I think the game's combat system actually shines really well in that section also.

I find the femininity interpretation of SH3 to be a little nauseating. As you said it's too on the nose for it to be an actual "deeper meaning". I personally experienced it as a familial revenge story coupled with a coming of age finding identity story, those elements are right on the surface and where the depth lies. Yes there's the blood and birthing imagery, but I viewed that as representing bloodline, lineage, and vengeance ("blood for blood"). Heather's body being used to birth "God" is a corruption of her family line and destroying it is a vindication of her trve father Harry. This is my masculine interpretation I guess.

The point is that the leftover energies from Silent Hill 1 are the reason for Silent Hill 2. The dude is basically just manipulating, through his subconsciousness, the energies that were left over from Silent Hill 1. Silent Hill 2 has multiple relations to the gods. In one ending, he specifically straight up says, there are still the gods in this place, and they can literally rebirth people. And that is definitely Valtiel, as seen in sh3 and stated by ito himself. Next, you also have the founder of the religion, which was burnt. The religion and cult are still extremely important. They were in 1, 3, and 4. Only in 2, they are only alluded to. And for some reason, the entire fanbase is stating that the cult is just some minor background thing, despite being the very core reason for the entire plot in 1, 3, and 4. In 4 specifically, Valtiel is imprinted upon the psyche of Walter, wanting him to rebirth God. But I guess people just need to play Silent Hill, and sadly they have not done that except for 2. Almost all of silent hill is about god and the cult, only 2 is about the personal life of James.

>A childhood friend of Hinako's, they still call each other "partner," just like when they were kids. Forward-thinking for the time, he doesn't see anything wrong with friendships with the opposite sex, and treats everyone alike. His family have been physicians for generations, leaving him knowledgable about various medicines and treatments

4 is more interesting of a game, senses to challenge the player and make the game genuinely feel more oppressive while also shaking up the formula which was much needed after 3.
I dont think SH3 is a bad game. But out of the first 4 its definitely the weakest and carried by how much people like Heather. SH1 is my favorite game in the series and I thought I'd enjoy 3 more than I did after the hype considering its a followup, but it feels more like "Greatest Hits of Silent Hill" rather than its own definitive standout thing

Yes, Origins wasn't perfect, but it was okay and I enjoyed it. Some of the monsters were brilliant and Grady was an interesting protagonist. The Asylum boss and Motel boss were pretty on brand.

as a stand alone horror game its ok. but it literally changes the lore of the SH1 and for that it can never stand next to the original four games

The story could be a 10/10 because Ryukishi writes god tier psychological horror. The atmosphere will be good as well. Not having any guns probably makes the experience scarier.

Origin releasing the way it did already is a big achievement considering it was pretty much entirely rebooted and done in 6 month with a lesser budget, Climax US were going to make it and did a terrible job, so when they closed down, Climax UK took the project and pretty much decided to entirely redo it (the director said it would have being "an insult to silent hill if the original project was the one that released") while salvaging assets, but the gameplay, the entire story and a majority of the game was different.
Climax UK then did Shattered Memories, which had much less issues in the development. It was deliberately different because it wanted to aim for a new market and not just regular Silent Hill fans.
They were going to make a third game in 2013, but it got canceled due to Silent Hills-PT.

I'm not sure if the studio still exist

this is stupid and disproved by the wave of "run away and hide in the locker" games that released in the early 2010s. Horror games are more intense when you the tension is compounded by the stress of having to manage limited combat resources

Well f still has combat, just only melee weapons (it's Japan in the 60s so it make sense for guns to not really be there)

They do, a friend of mine used to work for them before he moved to Supermassive. I got a look at one of the few manuals made for the first game called Cold Heart it was no loss. They did good work with Origins for what they had been given. I never played the PSP version, only the PlayStation 2 port.
