Half-Life 2 modders made better stuff than most indie games I've played. It truly was revolutionary, not to mention Garry's Mod inspiring numerous different game ideas outside of the game and engine itself.

You won't get such massive techological jumps in such small timeframes. Like going from 2d to 3d with ps1 was mindblowing. PS1 to PS2 can only be compared to going from static lighting to full path tracing. Consoles were actually made to play games and weren't gimped PCs. That started to change with gen 7. The only negative if you were a PC gamer is that your pc was ewaste in like 1.5 years. Like you couldn't even launch the game. I still remember people crying about prince of persia which required shaders to run.
