wc3 basically soft retconned the gnomes out of reality until they were brought back in wow because they ran out of development time to come up with a better 4th alliance race

Blizzard has never really cared about internal consistency and prefer gameplay consistency, so different races/species=different funny shapes=easier to read at a glance.
SC1 had readability issues which got fixed in WC3, also why the games became cartoonier and more grotesque as time went by, easier to read colors when a unit 60%+ color.

Swap out Priest for Chaplain (campaign)
Sorceress for Hydromancer (Campaign)
Paladin and Archmage are human
Knights are Bread and butter units
Replace Mountain king with Dark Knight (Campaign)
Footmen make elf pansy bowmen cry
Replace riflemen with spearmen (bandit unit)
Ballistae is technically a human weapon. (wc1-2)

So you only lose on the mortar teams, siege tanks, flying machines, Blood mage, and spell stealers.
