Shinobi is a joke game where you fight Godzilla, Terminator and Spider-Batman. Audiences outside Japan did not get the joke.

It’s hard to tell what’s a joke with Japan when they’ll flagrantly rip off a western IP and make a “parody” of it only to seriously insert the copy into their games. Metal Gear and its plagiarism of Escape from New York being a good early example.
