There's a saying in media, when making a show or story.

That's not to say you can't have simple or calm parts, but they need to serve the purpose of getting to the interesting parts of a character's story.
The old GoW had that. It had the downer beginning to immediately jump to why the main character decided to kill himself, explored through a big set piece. The new GoW failed at that immediately. Kratos is not moving towards an interesting part of his life, and it has to quite literally knock at his door ten minutes later.
There is so much "Why aren't we there?" in the newer GoW that it's sickening to think that the reason it gets away with it from a story perspective is because the player has a controller in their hand and can press the left joystick forward.
That's not good story writing, that's a crutch.

Both games are designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The result is the equivalent of claiming Transformers is the best movie of all time and that the runner up was fast and the furious which everyone knows to be false.

As for your statement about games relation to art, i disagree. Not only video games have as much right to be considered art as movies (considering the creation of both involve pretty much the same disciplines) but there is no other form of cultural expression that accounts for interactivity, which is a defining trait of contemporary culture. Off course not all games could be considered art in the same way not all movies are. Namely we should consider the industrial aspects of it and how some times it´s more about the manufacturing of a product rather than about expression. We should also take care to consider that certain technologies involved exist only to speed up production in detriment of the use of real artistic skill. AI aside industries have developed stuff like motion capture to avoid animation and all kind of procedural tools to build up NPCs and whatnot.

Big studios using these tools are certainly not making art but by itself that doesn´t mean games can´t be art as it still possible to use the more traditional methods in creation on passion projects.

Yeah and its okay. It has a few fun cinematic boss fights and I thought the narrative was decent, especially the stuff with Baldur (sorry i mean uh its onions!). Puzzles were boring, all the "RPG elements" sucked and most of the side content was extremely forgettable. The combat was decent and weighty but the fact that there are only like 5 enemy types makes killing the same exact troll guy for the 10th time really repetitive and the flying elf enemies are the bane of my existence, especially in that one elevator fight at the end. I'll probably play ragnarok at some point. It's a decent game and I'm not gonna judge someone for enjoying it but it's far from GOAT status

GoW 2018 has some of the best third person action gameplay of any game. It's a massive improvement over soulslikes, since it doesn't require lock-on camera.

The problem with new God of War is there's too much narrative which leads to these extremely long segments of the game with you just standing around doing nothing, waiting for these characters to stop talking or walking/rowing boats doing the exact same thing - waiting

People might claim the original God of War games aren't for "modern" audiences but that didn't mean the games had to become boring and slow paced. Even the overly narrative sections of the original God of War games happened when you were playing or during intense cut scenes which quickly throw you back into the game to engage with what just happened

Old God of War games could tell the story and keep the gameplay engaging, for some reason new God of War games cannot

The game just doesn't create you many great memories for the time invested in it (and I'm saying this as someone who also spent hundreds if not thousand+ hours in other competitive games like rts or fighting games). Not saying they can't mix in other mechanics too, but the very basic action of just clicking on things to make them disappear is very overwhelmingly what you are doing in them, and even adding a few layers of complexity on that like non-hitscan weapons that you have to time/space a bit differently doesn't give these games anywhere near as much complexity that most competent hack n slash games have in their fundamentals. Also don't confuse complexity for difficulty. Setting some "brutal difficulty" mode (or online play) in an FPS can be very difficult as it requires very strict timings with your aiming, but that doesn't make the game more complex.

Yes, it was okay. Cool idea to make a sequel of different genre and tone like they did, but it should've been a million times better. My problem is that here really isn't focus on Kratos actually regretting his past, or a threat that he will go back to being a world-ending god-slayer like before. Those happen, sure, but it feels superficial compared to what it's actually happening. Most of it is walking, doing fuck-all, coming across puzzles only to be told the answer 0.3 seconds afterwards (they might not have been boring otherwise), a combat that is okayish, all while Atreus has daddy issues. The story is a bit boring and could really use more cutscenes over characters talking trivial shit while you walk, or you walking across a forced cutscene.
Whatever gripes I had though, the sequel was worse lmao.

Minecraft is a sandbox for autistically building things, as a game it's just shit. It serves better as a

Half-Life 2 was a cool physics engine tech demo, that's about it, after Ravenholm, it just loses all of its steam.

BotW is some of the most boring shit to ever grace the face of the earth, the padded empty world, pretentious score, garbage console user interface, physics gimmicks and arbitrary mechanics made to purely inconvenience the player solidified its place in my "never touching again" library of games. Its open-endedness is the only aspect worthy of applause, if they condensed the world to like 1/4th of its size, you'd have something resembling a proper game.

Doom is just a relic of its time. I don't deny its role in video game history and influence for FPS game after it, but it's just that, history. Nostalgia doesn't make the game any less boring after you run through hangar, vibing with the music and the demon sfx until the very next stages bring you back to reality of running around in mazes of repetitive maps with the same one dimensional enemies.

Dark Souls is a genuinely enjoyable experience at least for your first time ever without having burnt out on the whole concept of "souls likes". Simple yet satisfing combat, interesting, interconnected world, good enemy and boss variety, challenging, fun to explore. Few bad decisions like bed of chaos and ceaseless discharge, run backs to bosses, and a lot of vast empty areas where it feels like they either ran out of time and/or budget, or just didn't polish, like the yard and crystal caverns leading up to Seath, entirety of Anor Londo just being completely hollow, Lost Izalith and possibly forgetting some other place.

I was waiting for that moment like my entire playthrough.
I got to the final valkyrie boss after forcing myself to beat the rest of them, and that fight was when I realized that this game's combat is bad. Straight up bad.
It's a disgusting mashup between bamham and souls combat systems. Completely and utterly regressive compared to series like devil may cry, which the original ps2-3 GoWs combat systems were based on.
You lose so much combat complexity and intensity for the sake of cinematic movie bullshit, which they're obviously more concerned about than making good combat. Developers like that have simply lost their way, and their games aren't worth playing after that point. Cause they're objectively making piss poor games at that point. You're literally paying for bad games at that point. All the shit that they're min maxing on during development can all be experienced on youtube. And it'll be a better format for it, because it'll skip the chore-esque gameplay that the developers begrudgingly shit all over their glorified B movie with to justify them labeling it as a "game".

I actually played it recently out of curiosity after years hearing about it being either the best or worst thing ever. The game itself is alright as long as you don't focus on the combat; amazing visuals and I found the level design to be mostly good. The combat, however, is terrible and the thing that pisses me off the most is that you can kind of tell there was somewhat of a decent foundation at first, but it was completely evaporated with some of the most dumbfounded choices I've ever seen in an "action" game: terrible lock-on, cooldowns, levels and gear like it's a fucking RPG. Also, some enemies are abysmal like those witches that teleport all the time and have awful hitboxes. The only fights I would say were mostly good without a lot of "buts" attached are the Valkyries, and you had to go completely out of your way for them. Still, fighting some of those you realize how bad the combat is because that's the only time the game more or less seems to want you to take it "seriously" as an action game, but the garbage system won't allow it because everything on it kneels to moronic RPG mechanics.

I'm not even a big GoW fan and when I think about 2018 in the context of action games it makes me mad. Sony Santa Monica should have caught more shit for selling out like that, but everyone praised it like they reinvented the wheel instead of taking away mechanics from whatever was popular at the time and slapping them together in a known brand.

It was a pretty good game with a really fun combat system, tho I liked the axe a ton more then the chains. My only big problem was that the game peaked in the intro, nothing gets close to the intro boss fight. Also the ghost pirate ship part was the most shit encounter ever put into a game. Mashing Y for 5 minutes got the job done.

But GOAT? No. Its fun, but its just too much like other Sony first party games. Its not special enough to hold that title.

I thought it was an okay 3D Zelda clone. Played on Give me a Challenge and the only challenge I got were valkyries (and they were probably the best part of the overall experience). Hated brain-dead puzzles, the diablo-esque loot system and how boring combat with regular enemies get, as well as higher difficulties just slapping higher enemies and lowering Kratos' damage output. But it was an-okay game for one run through.
