It's funny looking back at a game like this, a hybrid first-person/third-person cRPG/action game, and realizing that not a single company has managed to make a game like it since.

The closest thing is probably Fallout New Vegas or Cyberpunk, but even those games are quite different.

Hilariously, the options you have in VTMB are still few. Side quests usually only have one solution, sometimes two, three or more if Jason Anderson designed it. And you can't even kill story important NPCs, the game uses havens as a pacification excuse.
But it's still x10 better than any modern "role-playing game".

>and realizing that not a single company has managed to make a game like it since
Probably because it was an unfinished mess that killed its developers
Most companies don't want that fate for themselves

The game doesn't even have an open world, yet most interiors are accessible and they feel like actual places with people in them. No cars or means of fast travel yet taxis made more sense than fast travel ever did. It's not even a Valve game and it uses the physics of the Source engine more than most other games have even used physics at all. Game is even relatively non-complex compared to plenty of other cRPGs but it was still obviously complex enough for studios to decide that we have to dumb it down even further than that.

Pretty sad really. For a game made in the early 2000s it went notoriously over-budget and was rushed out to meet a deadline but despite that it did more with a handful of staff than major companies do with an entire legion of outsourced indians.

>my stats and character build is almost entirely unique per run and based off how I allocate points and weapon loadouts with different reactions to choice and dialogues and etc
It’s actually leagues better than most games in a pure gameplay sense as well

I agree. And you touch on a good point there too. No quest markers or "click on the map to fast travel" means the world had to be designed to be traversed on foot only (which means the hubs are large but still small enough with lots of amazing landmarks and visual detail to make interiors unique).
And it also makes the game much more immersive because if you want to know where to go, you need to ask for directions or consult a map on a bus stop or tourist booth, just like how you would navigate an unknown area in real life (before smartphone maps obviously).
Fuck what a great game.

the girls in this game were all hot even the nossies weren't too bad despite the graphics looking. It would've been cool to romance besides heather as your ghoul but this game is still peak.

More complex 3D games are basically barred due to the rising prevalence of dual analog control schemes past the mid-2000s.
You can't move particularly well, you can't interact with anything specific and you certainly can't aim at anything, so the game needs to be massively simplified into something that allows for a lot of invisible computer assistance without any ambiguity of input or glaringly obvious autopilot. Even something as simple as a 52 pickup simulator (aka anything with inventory bullshit) will run into input inadequacies.
Without adequate funding you can't make a game like this, and with adequate funding you are basically required to cater to controller plebs, which means you can't make a game like this. It's a catch 22.
