The current cramped layout is mostly just 5th gen fuckery that was never meant for anything more complicated than SM64.
The mouse has a massive advantage in terms of just how accurate and fast the inputs can be, to the point that there are entire genres (FPS, immersive sim, platformer without autocamera, etc.) that just aren't possible on controllers without putting in a massive amount of work or massively simplifying the game.
Even if you insist on controllers, the current iteration of controller has been incredibly retarded due to backlash against the Wii and subsequent collapse of the industry, and is still only suited for early 3D titles.

It's a good thing that mouse input is also vital for precise and fast movement in an FPS. Without mouse input you're relying on canned animations and context sensitive shit for movement.
