Just finished this, I can see why it's considered the weakest in the trilogy. Navigation is annoying, the counter mechanic trivializes the top-down sections and Eve isn't in it for 95% of the game. A shame because the story beats are kino.
Also the way Kanna was inserted into the story felt really fucking forced. Her section felt like a filler arc in an anime.

Frankly I prefer it way over Part 1 for the QoL but I get what he meant.
In BMZ2 the huge map is traded by multiple more compact ones since you are exploring multiple planets.
In BMZ3 it's all interconnected via warps, but kind of a mix but I felt the exploration hurt due to that. Still it was much more convenient to explore and backtrack in BMZ3 due to that, whereas in 1 you'd have to go through every nook and cranny back and forth to get all the upgrades.
The gameplay in 2 and 3 are also focused more on energy management since instead they modified SOPHIA to be able to recharge constantly for the space travel. So while in 1 you have a bigger energy bar but run out and that's it forcing you to be stingy with upgrades, in 2~3 you are encouraged to use those and maneuver to recharge accordingly, with Jason's gameplay on foot being adapted for a counter reactional style as well.

I think I do prefer 3 slightly more than 1 too, mostly because I think the top-down sections in 1 are really slow and kinda boring, and while the counter does trivialize those sections in 3, it is extremely satisfying to use.

Not sure how to feel about the final boss, honestly. On one hand it is pretty cool that it lets you choose. But on the other, one option leads to the hardest fight in the game, and the other leads to the easiest. And both of them will lead to the same ending. I feel like it would've been better if there wasn't a choice, and you just had to use Kane for it, it's a lot more satisfying conclusion that way. Besides, the dialogue afterwards leads me to believe Kane actually won that fight despite having an overwhelming disadvantage.

Yeah, after BMZ2 it did kind of feel like it ran out of steam since BMZ2 was such a solid entry by all accounts. That said, as everyone mentions, the ending is far more than worth it enough to push through. Especially since even if it is kinda a BMZ1 retread in some ways, it's still a decent game at the end of the day.
Plus Rising Garuda is the best fucking fight in the series, holy shit.

Yes. In the original, Jason refers to Leibniz as "あいつ" which is basically "that person" and that sounds weird in English.

Japanese does have a system of pronouns and equivalents to "he" and "she" (彼 for he, 彼女 for she), the difference being that Japanese is a language of brevity and they commonly omit that kind of detail unless it's relevant.

I wish we got more of the other pilots. It was a really good idea to build up from the concept of Planet Sophia sending those tanks to natives of other planets also becoming their own heroes.

Sometimes I wonder how things would have turned out for the series if Jason hadn't been asspulled back to life and Eve simply carried on in his stead. We would have missed the beautiful ending sequence of 3, but I was really bummed at how it threw all her character development from 2 in the trash.
