I love going on message boards and complaining about games I've never played
This can't be real.

This is a horrendous localization, as was tradition for Treehouse at the time. The original Francis was an otaku obsessed with figurines, for "some reason" (read: seething hatred of people on Nintendo's forums at the time) NoA decided to make him a strawman gamer

it didn't say this in the original language, another localizer using their position to whine about pro-gamers award

The best part is that they were right and Reggie of all people knew it, he started off his tenure with NoA calling Geist shit and never stopped. NoA at the time was dysfunctional as shit. Read about what happened with Project HAMMER. Reggie whipped them into shape for a few years before they got all whiny again and eventually he lost total control around the Wii U

I think it was actually a really great localization.
America doesn't have the same nerd culture that japan has, it would have been crazy stupid for them to translate it straight

>"Ugh, a cultural difference in a game made by a different culture? Disgusting! Let's just make it something completely different from what the writers wanted"
I enjoy how the people who complain about racism the loudest engage in racism like this

It would lose the joke entirely. There's no racism behind it

I mean I guess I would be okay with keeping it the same if you included about ten pages of TL note explaining the connotations and history behind Japan otaku culture and figurines.
