Them saving people gave them the support and strength to go further in their journey.
It's how they met important party members or gained their trust, it's how crucial events took place, it's how they got stronger and how they got closer and closer to the big bads. By not ignoring the ones in front of them and not just focusing on the "big picture".
Of course they're only a small group and they can't save everyone (Luin emphasizes this) But they saved the ones that they could and it benefited them in the long run. And even Luin becomes a symbol of hope depending on what the player does.
