The anomaly are the ones that can retain over 50% after 1 month of release. Just doing a quick look at all time top peak players, it looks like 60-70% are below 10% of their peak player count.

Monster Hunter is not always online game. You can play offline. Steam allows you to download updates individually instead of always defaulting to latest version. This is how RE3 modders get back the DX11 mode.

Long term sales are as important as day one sales for MH, plus lower user base directly means less sales for the expansion as well.
