Man, I so wish I could've played this game when I was 12 years old. Unfortunately I lived in the sticks and didn't even know what kinds of games were available for PS1.
I'm going through the game now, and while the setting and plot are interesting (and those animated cutscenes would've blown my mind back then), everything related to the gameplay is so aggressively shallow that it's difficult to not grow bored despite the intrigue... As a kid I didn't have any standards and would've just happily mashed my way through the game while being invested in the story, but now this is really difficult to endure when the game part falls so flat.

This guy filtered me on my first several runs as a kid. I remember restarting the game several times dreading getting to this part. Then eventually I figured out I could spam wild smile on him and he would miss every attack. The first time I beat him I was literally jumping around the room with joy

Got around to this one this year
Disc 2 wasn't that bad, in fact it'd be even more tedious if it was the length of disc 1
I got tired of the same songs though, they are good songs, but it's a 60 hour game and the OST only has 44 songs and there are only like 10 songs in rotation mostly throughout the game

Unfortunately largely true. Most JRPG series' are servicible at best in the battle system, including the various tales and star oceans.
What's worse is you also have cases like fairy fencer, where by some freak accident they come up with a very good battle system, and then render it completely moot because you don't have to use any of it to begin with.
I'll still take 4 niggas in a row over the lame halfassed shit they're trying to pass off as ARPG though.

Xenogears was one of the first games I played when it came out. My brothers and I played that Gears fighting mini-game in Nortune obsessively.

we also got filtered by that water puzzle so hard we just grinded all of our characters to 99 in the area because the combat was fun

you're supposed to pat yourself on the back not thinking the game is easy or slow, but thinking that you're a genius and the majority of people couldn't out-think the game the way you can.
The internet fucking ruined JRPGs for me
To be fair, most normies would actually probably think these games are intensely difficult and intellectually trying.

Don't even approach Legend of Legaia or Legend of Dragoon then. In Legaia you basically have those build-a-combos that take some time to finish. Sometimes the combos are so long that you already beat the enemy into a pulp several times over and the final attack still didn't trigger.

Dragoon has the opposite: your normal attacks are so weak that you need to spam Additions (the combos in Dragoon). That's why everyone who played Dragoon knows all additions by name, because that's all you ever did.

MADNESS
HERO!

Yeah, but at least Legaia's combos have unique effects and strategic value, whereas 90% of Gears' Deathblows are just marginally better physical attacks from previous ones.

I'm a giga-zoomer bladefag and even I love Gears. If it's 2nd disk was completed and could flesh everything out like the 1st it would unquestionably be the best of the Xeno-series, but as it is now it's just on par with the best of Blade and both are better than Saga

The fact that the game is balanced around buying the best Gear equipment means it is very well tuned in Gear fights compared to contemporary JRPGs. Can't overlevel characters too easily nor does it have so much of an impact on Gear fights, which often come down to the wire in 2nd disc bosses.

Thats because the game was made on a shoestring budget after it was demoted from FFVII to standalone, so everything but the story had to be scaled back massively in order to make both the budget and the deadline, after that Square Enix once again betrayed Takahashi when the game sold a million units but they refused to fundthe sequel and instead poured that money on Spirits Within, which is what caused him to leave for good and found Monolith.
If you want to play the actually finished version of this game you need to play Xenoblade 3.

The game isnโ€™t unfun, itโ€™s just fucking hard. They expect you to have max equips at every single point to progress, before the final battle you have to grind for hours for secret equips from a secret dungeon because heโ€™s literally impossible to beat without them. They increased the difficulty because the game was unfinished, short, Iโ€™m sure. The gameโ€™s fucking great though, I really liked it. Also try Breath of Fire IV

that era is about the worst it gets for jrpg gameplay, there was too much focus on long detailed animations
this made it more time efficient (by a lot) to just do the basic attack/heal scheme which encouraged grinding, which lowers the effective "difficulty slider"

a game that doesn't needlessly waste your time would have you using commands that aren't just your basic attacks which would allow you to take on riskier situations while balancing your resource economy and etc
that's why handheld jrpgs were generally the greatest
