What would be the problem? Pauline grew up and simply forgot about DK, probably thought it was a fever dream. DK meets her years later, she doesnt remember him, but he's obsessed and tries to kidnap her out of just missing her or being upset she forgot him. She eventually remembers him and which is why she goes on to name a whole city after him as she becomes mayor.
