Ape Escape was one of the first games that utilized the Analog sticks in the OG PS1. Keep in mind the controls for the different gadgets and tools was revolutionary for their time. From what I remember when I played it on release the controls were pretty intuitive.

compared to modern games the control scheme is certainly antiquated. It was literally their first pass and creating a game 100% around analog controls, in that context I think they did pretty well.
