They attempted to balance it, but the audience erupted in outrage when they nerfed Ines, leading to review bombing. Serena and Ines are definitely the most overpowered, but every descendant performs similarly if you max out their modules enough. The only difference is a 1-2 second variation in clear speed.

The grind is relatively fast. You can get any character in a couple sessions. All of the resources are easy to acquire. End game is still pretty fun, you have to learn the high level boss mechanics, know your role on the team. IE picking up motes, shooting boxes at the right time, etc.
The biggest issue is that post story there isn't enough content, but season 3 and open world field bosses is attempting to address that.
