Apparently there are 160 banandium gems, but it seems that's only for the skill tree and you're not required to collect them to progress, you apparently just get to the boss and defeat it to go further down. They're covered a lot in the direct but it's still unclear what your goal is. Just one level contains 35 out of 160 banadium gems but the level doesn't even look that big so I'm confused.

Considering that there are 90 between layer 2 and 3, I imagine what is happening is that they don't want to spoil you on how many Banadium Gems there are and the total of 160 is how many there is between the four layers unlocked. I'm not totally sold on this game being his enkore but I do think the frequency crocodile enemies and imagery we've seen so far is a bit suspicious, considering that the Retro games went out of their way to not include any in their games. Also the idea of Void Kong actually being Void K. Ong is kinda funny
