I played gen 1 to gen 3 when I was a kid then didn't play again until B/W and didn't finish then I played OR/AS and completed the Dex through trading with shiny copies of all legendaries, ev and iv hatched/trained a meta team, and FINALLY saw/caught my first naturally shiny pokemon. It was while I was ev training like 600 hours into the game and about 1500 hours into my pokemon lifetime. It was a Zigzagoon and it didn't have Pickup so I put it in a box and never looked at it again.

Technically a shiny Marill in Silver.
I got tired of the low encounter rate so I entered a cheat code to force the spawn. It showed up as a shiny but didn't feel right to catch it so I ran, the next encounter was some other normal spawn.
Turned out I never entered the master code so that was a completely legitimate spawn.

Latias. Off my copy of Sapphire back in the day, pure chance on the first playthrough I ever did. It really freaked me out because I had a crush on her after seeing Pokemon heroes, she was who I wanted a shiny of the most and I found her. It felt like she wanted me to when I was a kid.

I still have her, transferred her from every game upwards since, she lives in my copy of Violet right now. When I play Pokemon I like to pretend she's my wife, I know that's pathetic, but I don't care at this point, I love her.

But even in games with batteries like Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald the battery does nothing except regulate the daily events like growing berries, it has nothing to do with savefiles.
Savefiles should always be safe on old hardware, I think sometimes they might get corrupted but not because of the battery.

Let's see if I rememeber correctly, first you need a 3DS/2DS with Pokemon Bank. If you don't have Bank yet then you need a modded 3DS/2DS because the store is offline and you need to download it from the pirate store.
Then you need to move the pokemon to gen 4 with a DS or DS lite, with the GBA slot through the pal park (you can access it in gen 4 after you get the national dex).
Once the pokemon is in gen 4 you have to move it to White 2 or Black 2. Forgot all the details about this.
Then you can move it to Bank. From Bank you can move it to Home and to the newer games.

Shiny pidgey in Gold, then in that same playthrough I also got a shiny bellsprout. I got so pissed when I couldn't transfer them to the next gen.
I had good shiny and pokerus luck overall, mostly because I almost never used repels and I autistically ko'd most wild pokemons. In Ruby I got a shiny zigzagoon, wurmple (evolved into dustox) and aron, not all in the same playthrough (I used Colosseum to store and transfer them since my friends stopped giving a fuck about pokemon after RBY). Then I got an action replay to get the event pokemons, the shiny code existing made it trivial to me.

well actually gen 1 pokemon could be shiny, as gen 2 added shiny pokemon via having specific DVs (the same way it decides gender) and just like pokemon became male/female when traded from r/b/y to g/s they could also become shiny if they had the exact stat spread to make them shiny.

i got a shiny relicanth in Y from chain fishing, then a shiny finneon in omega ruby just surfing around. in ultra sun i soft reset for a few hours for a shiny kartana. then in scarlet i found a shiny teddiursa. i would have missed it if my friend didn't point it out. aside from those four, all my other shinies have been from events or fixed encounters

My only one ever has been an Ekans I got when mass breeding for IVs.

to this day I don't know what a "shiny" is except that it's exceptionally rare.
I haven't played a pokemon game since whatever the first one for the DS was, diamond / pearl?

Shiny Oddish in Pokemon Silver. Showed it to my friend sitting next to me, and said "that Oddish looks weird", then I ran from it.

I got 3 legit shinies in my first playthrough of alpha sapphire, zubat, gloom, and the reward totadile after delta episode. I almost reset that too bc the deoxys I got was shitty.

zubat in origin cave.
Never got another shiny until Snorlax in Soul Silver. Then an hour later, Seel in seafoam island.

I don't think I've ever encountered a shiny that I didn't breed myself.

Starly on Diamond
Been playing since Silver btw, and had several hundreds of hours on every game (that includes alternative versions too, so 100+ on Silver, 100+ on Gold, 100+ on Crystal and so on)

Did you play the new games? If so how were you able to not get even a shiny? They throw them at you. Played PLA and SC both on emulator and on console and got at least a shiny in every single playthrough.

Op was asking for one's first shiny, not all the one we got
Still on Diamond, I've got a Geodude and a Bronzong, then nothing until XY where I got a Meditite, a Mawile and a Dratini. SuMo and USUM didn't play, Sword was the last Pokemon game I played (didn't finish it tho, got to the league but dropped it) and got no shiny there

>bought both X and Y
>finished Y first, thought it would be fun to use a shiny in my X playthrough
>pick gardevoir because her shiny mega is cool
>set up everything for masuda method
>shiny ralts is the first egg
I think the first one I wasn't actively hunting for was a horsea in the same game because I accidentally did the chain fishing method just trying to catch something to finish the pokedex

Poochyena or Zigzagoon in Alpha Sapphire, somehow hadn't ran into one until then despite starting at Fire Red, the downside was that i didn't have Pokéballs unlocked yet so i couldn't catch it, next one was an Exeggcute in the post game.
