Underrail is a game vastly overrated on the 4chan for various reasons: it was made by a single person (which is respectable), the number of builds it lures the player into thinking it has, the turn-based combat which can be fun but isn't.

Underrail is a game with tons of fetch quests which are explained as follows: go fetch this, go fix this, go do that, as if the player was a post office worker. The problem is there is no other path to complete the quests and no meaningful consequences for completing them. You are forced to complete the quest in one way, the developer obviously intends unlike Vampire's, Fallout's, Planescape... I’ll give you an example. One early scene has an NPC open a vault, only to quickly close it again with horror as he sees something inside. He refuses to let anyone in, so surely this is foreshadowing some terrible evil about to be unleashed? Nope. I trudge all the way back to HQ, talk to Science Guy, trudge back to Soldier Guy, and then trudge all the way back to the vault again, then go in and stab the monsters inside. I’ve already fought things like them in another cave anyway. What load of bullshit, no loot, no unique weapons, nothing. Zero rewards.

There is no interaction between NPCs, whereas Arcanum, released 14 years before, does have.

There are only 2 different maps: Bunkers and caves.

The game tricks the player into thinking there is a lot of building variety until you discover that many skills and feats are useless. That's right, 90% of feats just make your weapon deal more damage. No special attacks, no new abilities, just damage

And most of the builds end up playing the same.

Underrail is overloaded with junk, much like Witcher 3, you gather tons of crap with little reason why.

Underrail offers crafting but imagine picking Arcanum's crafting system and draining all the imagination it has, you get underrail's crafting.

Walls in underrail make it difficult for the player to aim a target, an issue Fallout 1-2 doesn't have.

The fun in this game stems from min-max autism turned to an absurd degree, but if you aren't a brainlet you solve the game rather quickly and then it will play the same until end of time. Get nades, get adrenaline, abuse the action economy... Even at their worst, the games Underrail is inspired by had strong narrative hooks to contextualise a player’s decisions, and give incentive to go on through stickier patches. Fallout had the water chip, Planescape had Nameless One’s identity and the tragic fate of Mrs One, Baldur’s Gate had the ol' reliable “why’d this sumbitch kill everyone?”, DoS2 had the source and magic powers. Without that, all of those games would have not had a hook, that's what underrrail lacks, a hook. You'll play it once till you get to core city and then you drop it because there's nothing there

Stealth, or go blasting with nigtillion grenades, caltrops and gas. If you have Persuasion you can also do some amount of social stealth by finding and wearing a soldier / officer uniform in one of the early lockers. Only works if you're playing as a male character.

I agree witb alot of that actually. Underrail is great on a gameplay and mechanical level. I also think the overall World building and Level design is boring and lame compared to Fallout 1/2. I initially dropped the game becuase of I hated how everything was underground and the caves felt linear and you where heavily expected to just fast travel everywhere. It's something I also think is bad about Morrowind(despite people praising Morrowind becuase becuase that system is still better than later TES games.).

I came back to the game during a game drought and fell in love with the gameplay and the simple dopamine hits from leveling and progression and becoming stronger. While doing quests in a non-linear fashion.(choosing which to do in what order.) I actually restarted mid playthrough to play on Dominating becuase on Normal it falls into the common trap of power creep and becoming too OP too easily. Something more traditional and linear CRPGs don't face until very late game.

It's a difference of modern indie and modder design that tend to cater to an extremely small niche of players vs game devs that make a game that is meant for a broader audience of RPG players.

No, this game isn't a character focused RPG where the main gameplay is the differen't ways to complete a quest and character interactions in your party. It's a non-linear sandbox in isometric form. It's heavily combat focused like a SRPG. Like Bethesda games, that freedom comes in what questlines you choose to do first and which you choose to ignore. Everything is open to you after Junkyard.

It's something lacking in most CRPGs. Fallout 1/2 is one of tbe o ly other series that share that same Themepark-ish not-Open World design. Most CRPGs, like Bioeare or infinity engine games, are rather linear in their world design and what content you have available to do. Ypu are limited to the current "Act".
