Mario being more popular than RaC has to do with the fact that the franchise was almost singlehandedly responsible for popularising gaming and bringing it to mass audiences (alongside the likes of pong and pacman). There was a time where the word "nintendo" was used interchageably with the word "gaming console", even if the console itself wasn't a nintendo console.
Its no wonder it sells more than RaC, a franchise that would be considered niche even within the Playstation ecosystem.
