Rebirth sold a lot less than Remake. Launch sales did below SE's expectations.
I think the marketing was kind of subpar, the demo was mediocre and had quite a few issues that took over most discussion of the demo and the game only launched on the PS5 which doesn't have nearly as big of a userbase as the PS4.
It's kind of riding entirely on the metacritic score which was really high.
Square Enix really sold on this entire remake trilogy project. They're locked in for another one now but their returns have not been nearly as high for what they expected to be a mega hit. Hopefully it doesn't mean that the third part will get less resources for the development, but I doubt it.
Following the trend, the third part is likely to have an even worse launch than Rebirth which would cement as arguably a disaster.
They need to nail the way they present the final game.

Not really, by all accounts 2-3 million sales should be quite good for any JRPGs
The problem is Square Enix thinks final fantasy is a giga AAA huge budget series now, but Square Enix hasn't realized that they've pretty much lost most of the audience, they aren't showing up for these games anymore.
XV was so massively hyped with this enormous marketing campaign and it sold very well.
But the game ended up being a stinker, so a lot of people who bought into the hype walked away with this really disappointing experience, they're not there for 7 remakes and XVI because SE didn't win them back.
Same thing with DMC1-3
DMC1 was great so more people buy DMC2
But DMC2 was complete shit, so even though DMC3 was far better, the sales were lower.
