I'm gonna go autistic, so bare with me.

The issue with Andromeda wasn't just that Ryder wasn't Shepard, is that every character was a ... I was gonna say downgrade, but it's more like a cliff jump down from the trilogy characters. And the point of bringing Shepard back is the chemistry and interactions with the remaining OT cast. If you're bringing Shepard back just to have him without anyone he loved, my first choice would be switching professions to master bullet biter.

It's great that you feel that way. This doesn't actually solve any of the issues Bioware has with the franchise. I'd argue that ditching ME entirely and going for a new IP would be more beneficial to them, than trying to directly compete with their better past selves, but that's not what they chose to do. And that's their own issue. I'm here to discuss ME, not other franchises, though.

I don't disagree necessarily, but they won't be able to sell the game without them.

To be fair, according to Schreier's article, Bioware doesn't even exist, as of May. It's just a few dozen people working at an EA work hub.

While that's true, just trying to write within the confines of the established characters should be a lot easier than trying to write and establish new characters. For example, I'm given the rights to a new LotR story. I can choose between writing King Aragorn on daily duties and entirely new character that does stuff that can't influence Middle Earth in any way possible, or happen so far removed from the events of LotR that nobody will give a shit. I choose to write King Aragorn.
