the simple fact that it is one of the only RPG that managed to be playable when playing roles that aren't simply about fighting.
It is worth playing as a charisma-maxxing guy, an intellect-based character or an alchemist/crafter kind of player or the classic fighter-type. Fighting itself has lots of different "builds" that don't devolve into "X stat makes damage bigger".
There are also a satisfying amount of branches and mutually exclusive event to make the story replayable and the game isn't afraid to be extremely hard or even unjust.
It's the kind of game concept that every RPG fan dream about.

It's been a while since I've played but I remember the combat and story/world being amazing. Wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it's a fantastic RPG

well you don't have to succeed every checks. Might as well play with a walkthrough in that case.
When playing for the first time, I actually found it very interesting that I had to abandon my pacifist/charisma methods to rely on firebombs in a specific fight as there was a check that I couldn't pass.
It forces adaptation and failing that check drives you to try again later

Well it's certainly among the best crpgs so far. What do you think is better, Colony Ship?

I was born in the 90s, and really enjoyed it.

Well a combination of a signifigently branching narrative, avoiding overdone tropes for a unique story, and setting. Interesting characters that provide widely branching quests, basically no quest in the game is "Go here to kill hogs for eleven pork butts (Some hogs don't have butts)." Wildly different character builds, and actions that support them. Well written dialog.

the only thing that you could hold against the game is the amount of reading required but it's not even that bad, it's more that it's a lot compared to the slop that exists nowadays.
The world is actually really well made when you bother to read

Not for Sierra games. They play almost exactly as the modern point & clicks, only with more pixel hunting and no QoL like highlighting points of interest. I'll admit that some of them aged badly (Phantasmagoria is a hidden object game, until the terrible final chapter with save point that fucks your progress), but most are still perfectly playable.

Not him, but it's genuinely the first game that managed to make sense, work and be enjoyable while not forcing you to fight all the time or go through encounters by only fighting. Also it has a ton of replayability compared to other crpgs considered excellent here. It's a good game but ADHD subhumans are the norm in gaming so everyone shits on it.
