It's nothing complex, it's that the ye olde game sniper class always fucking sucked. Literally every class based shooter has the sniper class and every edgy teenager immediately locked it in, ran off to the farthest corner of the map, and began plinking off headshots for 20 years straight and by now he's so good at it he could shoot god out from heaven.

It's fucked up because TF2 is unironically better than a lot of them, at least the maps are fairly tight and there was an attempt at making a hard counter class. In every other game you were just expected to play the luck of the draw as to whether sniper island was looking in your direction or not with nothing you could really do against them.
It was just always the worst element of these games but any time you asked "so what classes?" it was always "uhh basic soldier guy... heavy machine gun guy... like, a recon dude... oh yeah, and a sniper!" because of course they would, everyone put a sniper in. And it always sucked.

Eh, Spy is a fun and unique gameplay experience. And although Sniper is kind of generic, it is kinda challenging to snipe people in a game as frenetic as TF2 (though honestly, it was harder and funner in the previous games)
Sniper is unfun to play against but if you are facing a good spy, like, just kill him? Iunno man. Game has way more problems than than Spy that's for sure.

Sniper yes, spy no. The later has to risk his skin while going for picks, high reward but also probably even higher risk. I hate dead ringer but that's it.
Sniper meanwhile doesn't risk anything. Missing shots for other classes means death, sniper can just keep taking potshots until he gets bored.

My issue with sniper is that his uncharged headshot needs to be hard-scaled to do less than 150 damage. Like all headshots below around 5-10% charge should just do like a forced 135 or 140 no matter what. This would go a long way in forcing snipers to charge their gun for bulkier targets

It's good if you use it as it's intended, which is deleting enemies in a group without anyone noticing until it's too late, that being said its playstyle is a bit more rigid and once people figure out you are using YER they will be paranoid as fuck with their spychecking.
