I love Marle though, she's cute. I think people hate her because they like Lucca, and Marle has romantic feelings for Crono(your protag) while Lucca does not, and seems to love you as a brother/best friend

Lucca is cool but even if she were an option I think I'd have preferred Marle over her anyway. Not an opinion shared by most though hence the dislike. Some people say her spells suck too but CT is so damn easy I can't imagine that being anyone's primary reason (and haste isn't that bad anyway, and Antipode 2 is Godlike)

Biggest problem is her techs:

She's good early on due to Aura Whirl, but items just get so plentiful and useful by the time you can swap her out that she's basically never needed.

Provoke is basically useless.
Haste is only single target.

She has some good dual techs with Lucca, but why bother when Lucca is good on her own and Alya or Magus for Charm or more damage?

Marle at least has two things going for her
1. She is the only who learns Haste, which given Haste Helms are limited AND don't provide near as much Def as other helmets, makes her very useful for killing things very quickly.
2. She is the best 'single' Healer in the game bar none. The only thing holding her back is she can't multi-heal without a Dual Tech but at high levels even just a basic 'Cure' or 'Aura' will heal 999 HP easy, making her the most economic healer for the most health regen per MP spent

Nah, that's cope. JRPGs of the era absolutely had gameplay depth—you just had to dig a little. Trigger streamlined mechanics in a smart way without throwing out strategy. Double and Triple Techs alone gave more mechanical crunch than most slogs from the PS1 era. Cross on the other hand felt like they had ideas and then got bored halfway through implementing any of them. 42 characters and I used like 5.

Indiana Jones is just a middling action adventure IP that is elevated to greater heights thanks to the collaborative effort of the creative heads behind it.
Remove Spielberg, Ford or Lucas from the equation and the whole thing crumbles.
Chrono Trigger is the same thing - as an IP it's just another run of the mill RPG, what elevates it is the technical and design mastery on display borne out of the collaboration between the main creative leads behind Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
Remove them from the equation and you get Chrono Cross - just another run of the mill RPG.

i wouldn't say Cross was run of the mill but it definitely wasn't a worthy successor to Trigger. tonally it was all wrong and just not similar enough to feel like it's in the same franchise. but at least it was trying new things, like the elemental area thing in the battle system.
