How come in the early 2010s, there are like 3 billions zombie game out there and suddenly we don't even make them anymore. I remember being so obsessed with zombie genre when I was young even though I don't even really understand why.

How come we still have yet to have the best zombie game? Surely we have the technology to do that by now...

damn i haven't thought about that game in a long time. paranoia spooked me as a kid, the visor mechanic was neat, and classic RE of course.

the fad just petered and most people moved on, though it's still around in some forms.

Sad that there was never a proper successor. Contagion was fun but failed to improve and in a lot of ways was worse.

I love the feeling of piling up furniture and shit in a house, nailing the windows shut, and knowing that the horde is coming for you. It's like the classic Romero vibe and almost no other zombie game has captured it. Even if they were good in their own ways

Zombies are a pretty shit and bland in vidya. Their main gimmick of infecting others doesn't even play out in the game mechanics usually.

Because zombies are played out and just go back to making the games boring shooters with the usual cast

>explosive ones
>brutes that charge in one direction (bonud if their weak point is on their backs)

The best zombie games imo focus on everything else around the zombies and not the zombies themselves if that makes any sense, just look at the original DR, the only zombies are slow oned yet it's one of the most fun games ever made

They all gave up when Dying Light came out. They all collectively threw up their hands and said "We give up. There's no way we can outdo that. Not now, not ever. Best to call it quits while we're ahead."

And since then, not even the Dying Light team themselves could outdo the first game. It has an unmatched atmosphere of a quarantined city mere weeks after the initial outbreak, the bodycount still rising high. It's not the stale post-apocalypse, it's just starting.

the popular genre changes every few years

There's a lot of nuance to a good zombie game when usually zombies are put in for quick and easy enemies to deal with. Most of these games are about killing zombies, so that should be as satisfying as possible. Running through Dead Island 2 with a friend, the gore system is cool and they did good work on the environments, but the animations and model varieties are lacking. Granted the game was probably a rush job on its third iteration, but still. Zomboid, dev incompetence aside, will always be a failure when there's like three zombie walk animations and they all raise their arms when they get close. Give me a visual treat when you're mindlessly bashing mindless enemies!
