Hey, same boat! I came late to the series, but I started with the OG, then played HR, then MD. MD is infinitely better than HR. I really don't get why HR gets so much love and MD gets so much hate. The side stories in MD are really, really good, especially if you don't take the aug that cheats dialogue for you and instead use your deduction & gut feeling to guide you through.

Both of the newer games have rather mediocre endings, but MD without question has the better world design/playable area and side missions, both of which are where you will spend the bulk of your time.
