This is a big part of it. MMOs nowadays get made as cash grabs that focus on recouping all the investment in the launch sales batch and then milk the game to death with MTX. They aren't interested in making a good long term game that players stick with.

one big problem I see with these forever early access games is that once they come out in 1.0 they're going to have a population of veterans who know everything about the game, everything will be datamined and documented and as a result the charm of a new release will be missing entirely

Every time I bother to check their news they're selling new skins for a fucking pre-Alpha 2 game.
They show enough gameplay footage that I don't think it's a scam but it is really trying so fucking hard to be its unreal.
It might also be that literally every single app tries to take away your attention and using psychological tricks to keep you there. So the F2p that would normally fill up your MMO are now just doing other things.

I tried getting into MMOs when I was a kid, but they felt like senseless grinding and I didn't yet understand the fun of RP. Add in the microtransactions or $15/month sub, and it just made no sense.
