I only played 4 hours but 2 of those were spent grinding to maxx out the loyalty and capacities of the demons you can get before tsuchigumo. Despite how lackluster it looks the battles are very fun but I don't understand why. I got so engrossed with the grinding that I was a bit disappointed to have to continue the story.

Yes, they have little bubbles above their heads that are grayed out when there's nothing new for them to talk about. A few NPCs around Tsukudo-cho for example will have new bits of dialogue to read when you advance the plot. Nothing crazy important, but I think its fun to see what they have to say. The only ones that don't are on the overworld map, which can be missed if you use the Express Car a lot.

While I like the changes to melee combat I dislike Raidou getting access to signs, I feel like elemental exploitation should be up to the demons, especially now that you can have 2 out at a time in Raidou 1. The gun should've also stayed the way it was in Raidou 2, it doesn't need to take up two buttons and the firing speed after locking on is insane, it was better when you just tapped Square to shoot and held to reload. the regening ammo also removes the need to reload, which I think having the reload was a perfectly reasonable thing to have with infinite ammo. I also dislike how the demon invincibility thing is on the stick to toggle instead of being a held input on L2. Command Menu on start also makes it a bit clunkier to use.

Overall I think the combat IS better, but if they reverted some of the newer changes to be more inline with Raidou 2 with the new melee, the game would be much better.

Raidou XL can't send his (or her?) body back in time, but can send his spirit. His spirit possesses Kaya, who I think is just "spiritually sensitive", to have a physical body. The Center sends the robot Rasputin back after him as a "time cop", apparently sending robots is doable but not organic matter.

The Super Soldier project was originally Munekata's idea, to be used in the war in China presumably. Sukuna-Hikona possessed Munekata and transformed it into the Soulless God project that would be used to destroy Tokyo. Now why did XL like that idea and support it? Basically he figured if Tokyo is destroyed RIGHT NOW, Tokyo can never become Tokyo Millennium. Maybe something else would happen, but not the same way. He just wanted to divert history and went big rather than relying on Butterfly Effect. Maybe he wanted to make sure whatever he did was big enough that the Center couldn't undo his actions. I would also look sympathetically at him as a figure who was born in a place called "Tokyo" he hated more than anything else and wanted it wiped off the face of history.

Anyway it's kind of a silly afterthought twist Kaneko seems to have added as fanservice for longtime fans. The plot would work just as well if Sukuna-Hikona was the main villain, but adding a tragic antihero who just wants to stop SMT1/2 from happening makes the ending a lot more memorable, even if he's kind of a retard.

I used to have a bunch of cool XL fanart but it seems lost to time now. Oh well.

I think I saw a screenshot a while ago of the detective journal entry about Raidou XL being a woman (not impossible, during the game over sequence you can see some of the previous Raidou's spirits are female as well) and does indeed confirm XL being a descendant of the Daidouji family so she has that connection to her ancestors.
