Not that other anon, but I too much prefer the original's OST. The remake's OST is incredible as a standalone and is even still good in the game. The strings and brass added to songs is fucking awful most of the time IMO.
The original Snow in Summer is more subdued and there is more space for silence. Nier is not one some classic heroic last stand to protect his sister, something where the orchestral additions would fit. The world is fucked. They're scavenging for scraps of food and his sister isn't doing well already. He's malnourished himself. The absence of more sound gives more space for the hollow drums ring out more, making them sound more menacing and oppressive. Nier is fighting in his sorry state to protect his sister to the very last. It's hopeless. He'll give her seconds maybe. Or by some miracle, she might escape for a while. And even then, she'll likely starve to death soon, before even the shades find her.
There's no hope. The original Snow in Summer feels more in tune with that. Yet Nier fights to protect her anyway. Him doing so despite how hopeless it is, that's what makes the scene work for me.
Another offender is Grandma. The strings just seem to patronizingly say "now feel sad!", when the original without them already did that just fine. Have a little faith in the player. I can come to my own conclusions and feel what I feel.
The remake OST is certainly good. I'm fond of the remake version of Gods Bound by Rules. Just many of the tracks feel like they don't fit the game aswell as the originals do.
