Given that the game is completely MIA nearly two years after the release of Spider-Man 2, I'm at least partially inclined to believe that the tepid response to 2 and the reactions the leak generated has led to a massive retooling for the Wolverine game.

Yeah and it flopped hard enough to kill all the plans they had for DLC and a MP Spider-Man game. Or at the very least, it didn't seem to sell any better than the first despite having a budget thrice as big. Insomniac probably figured they're gonna need to rethink Wolverine if they want it to do well lest Sony shuts them down.

Boring, sterile, but has bits that are enjoyable. Really the perfect compliment to the MCU.
It's clear Rocksteady and WB games do not have it anymore but it's funny how the Arkham series is visually distinct and has it's own, but flawed, worldbuilding. Insomniac Spider-Man just feels like MCU except they go a little bit more into the villains. I still can't believe that they decided Peter didn't look like a generic white twink, so they changed his appearance. What a bizarre choice. Nobody was bitching about his former appearance.

First game's fun enough; story's a mess but at least a decently enjoyable one carried by the Doc Ock scenes. The main problem is that gameplay is as deep as a puddle. By the time the story's over, you'll have explored basically all that the game has to offer. There's nothing more to it, but then they decided to give you 3 shitty DLC episodes, a spin-off, and a sequel, and all with progressively worse writing and exactly the same gameplay.

First game is the best piece of modern Spider-Man media since Raimi's movies, it took all the shit I didn't like about BND era Spider-Man and made it actually work

Tbf it was leaked that Rift Apart cost about 80+ million and made decent profits despite being an early PS5 exclusive w/ the console shortage. SM2 was 315 million w/ Marvel taking 10-20% of their revenue (based of physical or digital sales). Accounting for this, could’ve had almost 4 Ratchet-sized games where they probably would've made similar level of profits combined anyways. The high costs, diminishing returns, the growing superhero fatigue, and aggressive royalties to Marvel is unsustainable and will fuck them over if they have a single flop. They’re better off making smaller scale games like Ratchet games. Bigger isn’t always better.

SM2 felt like a huge disappointment. Almost 3-4 times the budget of SM1 with very little to show for. They made MJ the most unlikable and ugly female character they’ve made in a while. I’m a long time Ratchet fanboy so I’m biased, but at least Rift Apart was a lot of fun and Rivet is a lot more fuckable than MJ (not a furry though).

I'm honestly fine if rift apart was their last ratchet game and the next one got cancelled. I say this as a long time fan too but it's clear insomniac is running out of ideas for ratchet, which is why they introduced this multiverse shit with rivet
There's only so many ways to grind on rails or create an interesting shotgun, plus they will never experiment with pure shooters ever again like deadlocked after it got (undeserved) hate so the whole series just feels like it's running out of steam

Having seen the leaks for the next game that was planned in 2029 (idk if it still the plan), it sounds promising, with a more mature tone. There were a couple pages of the script leaked and it looked pretty good. Apparently space travel will be back. They can always introduce some crazy weapons and maybe bring back things like the Plasma Whip, etc. The game doesn’t have to be revolutionary but as long as it’s appealing and not copy and paste, it should be fine.

Also, they also are supposed to develop their own IP going into the 2030s but we will see if it’s some woke slop like Intergalactic.

As for SM2 I can’t think of anything it does better than SM1 aside from traversal and some minor graphical upgrades. Everything else felt like a downgrade, about the same, or generally a trade-off.

The hate for 2 is overblown.

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt which is why I didn't buy it. Some people got really mad at me for saying it looks better gameplay wise, but not 60 dollar better. Dunno why cause it's not like they radically uplifted the combat or made the stealth and/or civilian moments not suck.

I ended up really enjoying the first game when I got it on sale for PC. However the sections where you just sneak around (as MJ or as Miles) and learning those were back in bigger number in the second games stopped me from buying it.
Oh also I used a mod to give Peter his more tired older face back.
