Story! arr and hw is rather whatever hw has its moments, stormblood is some pointless fucking politics, shadowbringers is kino, endwalker is kino, dawntrail is fucking whatever it has nice areas the themes change but story is just fuckall whatthe fuck did we even do here, combat is dogshit boring infact everything in this game is so god damned boring. Endgame raiding content is basically learning a set dance with no deviation and then do it every single time the same way and you get absolutely fucking nothing for it, next patch or raid tier your hard earned gear is only useful to get new gear that has only use in the raids and even then its so insignificant. Things are different. Things did change. The problem is they took the wrong lessons.

Bozja was fine, its only issue being an unsatisfactory story ending and the areas being ugly. But for some reason instead of just giving 3 alliance raids again they pulled another even less accessible Baldesion's Arsenal. After getting an entire expansion without those extras.

No one except a very small devoted following, especially on JP, likes Deep Dungeons, but they keep making them while Variant/Criterion, which do get engagement, keep getting delayed or cut.

Chaotic Alliance raids are another piece of content that gets no engagement from the vast majority of the playerbase.

And on top of this situation where content is being put out that no one plays, the frequency of cotnent updates is at an all time low, lower than it was during fucking Covid. We used to have 112 day patches and 2 year expansions.

I've been playing the game every day for the past 7 years and I've been now unsubbed for more than 7 months. I think what hurt it the most was the fact that the Chat Bubble and Raid Planner features that were directly part of the LL's later sections were hard confirmed for 7.4. That and the opening section with Yoshida addressing all the complains about OC, half of them barely landed with the guy when there are some serious design flaws to the content and everyone can see it. Not sectioning off the map into chunks like Bozja's zones really hurt how freely available or how easy it is to just snipe FATEs and never miss CEs. You're constantly on the move thanks to the absurd spawning timers.

I don't think its quite that dire. They definitely work very far ahead of where we are on the active game and I absolutely believe that at least up to 7.3 was set in stone before DT released, and the rest at least storyboarded and strongly implied. All the content for 7.X as well was probably determined and only the timelines shift as stuff gets delayed or moved.

But there's no shot they'd already firmly decided on 8.X story and have it well under way before DT launched. They'd obviously know what they want to do with it as far as "going to X part of the world and fighting Y antagonistic force" but the finer details would only be in the most preliminary stages, and DT's 7.4 and 7.5 would need to set it up as well.

Just as an example, SB was received quite negatively in the story and they still had to finish out what they started. But they made a huge bounce back for ShB which had a great story. And I think DT already have a mostly throwaway MSQ (its entire purpose in the grand scheme was really to set up the otherworld travel and open the door for future expansions)

They shot their shot with the woke shit and the wuk shit and it failed miserably. I don't think they're so tone deaf that they aren't going to attempt a full 180 after that.

No it wasn't. Before DT launched they said that they have different potential plot continuations depending on player feedback, to the point that made it sound like they weren't even confident in the DT story. There's no way they had the entire 8.0 story already set in stone.

The cycle is dog shit but the content (for the most part) is pretty good
both raid tiers have been a lot of fun so far
and even simple things like the dungeon bosses have been more engaging (where EW's were some of the most mind numbing shit)
