Honestly I think Nintendo should've focused on adding more courses that aren't intermissions that nobody likes to the point of everyone, even casual players, picking random to avoid. People were spoiled by 8DX's 48-96 courses (you didn't even need to buy the DLC to access the Booster Pass online so for a lot of people it was a free update), so going back to the usual count is a huge downgrade even if that additional content in 8 was added over time.
It's the same problem Wii had with 7 and base 8 since they were spoiled by mods like CTGP-R and eventually Retro Rewind. Except in Wii's case it was a modding niche, here, everyone had access to 8DX's content.

In knockout mode the most consistent strategy is to stay just outside the bulk of the pack and use stored items to push through at the last moment.
