That scene gives the most weight to them being real at least to some extent. Most people wouldn't apologize to a video game character with genuine regret. He also doesn't cut off or shut down Lune/Sciel when they speak up. I'd have included at least one line "what about us" from Sciel/Lune but I was happy with what we got. Sciel knows if in that position she'd do the exact same thing and Lune has plans to understand more of the painted world and outside world after they stop the immediate threat.

I did the Maelle ending and don't regret it but Maelle just painting even more thousands of people inside another world that three layers deep just so that Lune can satisfy her intellectual curiosity of what the outside world looks like is insanity.
