But it's nothing? I'm not denying that the fidelity of the game's visuals are outstanding. But your example stinks.
You need to actually do something with the visuals for them to look good. You can't just have expertly rendered rocks.

Makes the adventure less "lonely". Serves as a contrasting foil to the older guy protagonist/player character. Needs to be small and carryable to make sense for being constantly with the protag. Can be more of a character than a simple dog/pet companion. Cute factor sells. Funny factor sells. Should I go on? It really shouldn't be a mystery.

It’s the new shortcut for emotional depth without writing a real character. Put a kid next to a gruff dude, and boom—you’ve tricked the player into feeling something. See also: Ellie, Atreus, that girl from Bioshock Infinite. It’s cheaper than developing a complex adult side character and gives devs plenty of chances for “press X to feel” moments. Bonus points if the kid says weird philosophical stuff.
