Is there anything that confirms that DK is as old as he normally is? Can't this just be a young DK with an equally young Pauline and this is more of an origin of how they met?
Looking around, Diddy Kong has only very superficially been called DK's nephew in manuals and not much in actual games, so him being there as a friend and just being as young as DK (maybe a little younger) is not a huge stretch.
I really don't see them making Pauline younger AND turning her into a stone thing. Why would you do both?
I also really don't see her being Pauline's daughter (much less with Mario) cause of just how similar they are and how confusing it would be.
