Long story short his game doesn't work without Steam because it doesn't save your progression, it checks your steam achievements and puts itself in the corresponding state as a way to fight piracy according to him so if you have no Steam connection, you start again from 0. What's funny is that you can circumvent his "piracy protection" with a simple text file.
