I randomly started thinking about it again the other night. Such wasted potential. No one could have expected it to blow up as big as it did, but after the fact Niantic largely failed to develop it significantly. Even if they didn't want to dilute the brand they should have made a spin-off in a similar vein but using older gen sprites and the proper battle mechanics etc. That would have printed money.

I played this with my buddy (i.e., he played it and I walked around with him because I didn't have a phone that could play it) when it released. Great times, man.
Learned recently it's still a thing and it has some kind of competitive scene these days, and my buddy is now a mid-sized name in it. So that's cool.

gamefreak at least deserved the success it had with the initial pokemon games, despite them having many issues they were at least legitimately good games for the time with innovate features.

niantic was just always the absolute worst at everything it did and pretty much had middling success due to a good ideas and some luck, and has shit the bed since then consistently.
