Exactly. It's like trying to flex over beating Tic-Tac-Toe after thousands of people already figured out how to never lose. DS1 was hard back when no one knew what "poise" did or where the hell to go after Blighttown. Now there's guides, optimized builds, and speedrun strats down to muscle memory. Only reason it's still "hard" is if you're new or trying to do some meme run.

Back then most people were just mooks that weren't very good at games in general, the skill ceiling to being 'good at games' was pretty low.
So you had a lot of people with shitty builds that were the opposite of optimized, playing the game poorly and missing a lot of basic stuff or not understanding how mechanics interacted.
Dudes like EpicNameBro were Gods for doing basic analysis of game mechanics and understanding what and how things worked.

yep - people may find this extremely hard to believe but being good at games wasn't actually part of "gaming culture" back then.
a game asking as little as dark souls asks of you was mind blowing for everyone. the concept of challenge being fun was completely foreign. God Hand getting a 3/10 from IGN was the way most people felt about challenging games.

People used to quit the game as soon as they died, if you were quick enough it'd reload your last save before dying. People also used that to dupe items online & to sequence break, like dropping through the water in new londo where only the surface of the water kills you.

Yeah, there's a reason that really oldfags still suck off Kamiya, Mikami, or Itagaki, because they were basically the only dudes making games that were actually hard at the time.
Dark Souls was more cinematic than their types of beat-em ups, so it captured the attention of an audience that otherwise had absolutely no experience with the style of challenging video game.

that only works when you fall off the map
