Reds click when you bottom out the key and when you release the key.
They are only quiet compared to the other, even louder switches.
With that acknowledged, I still prefer them between those 3.

For typing and work, my favorite is my Model F. For gaming I prefer Topre (but they're too fucking expensive at retail for what they are, especially HHKBslop; the only reason I have a RealForce anyway is because I won mine in an auction for much cheaper than normal).

I've found that I'm not a fan of MX/derivative switches for longterm serious use, their lack of inherent sync between actuation and tactility starts to become noticeable to me over time.

Here I'll save you years of time and keyboard tinkering.
>best linear switches
Gateron yellow, Gateron Ink Black
>best clicky switches (light)
Kailh box white, Gateron Melodics (on the heavier side of light)
>best clicky switches (heavy)
Kailh box jades (box navies for even heavier)
>best tactiles
Boba U4T, Chosfox Voyager v2 (note: avoid if you're using MT3 or similarly tall and heavy keycaps, actuation issues), MMD Princess Tactile
>i'm a hipster and want a light tactile
Kailh box browns, v1 if possible, otherwise settle for Kailh box whites and put up with the clicking
>but what if i want oneness with cup rubber
Get one of those Niz topre clones. It's gonna cost you an arm and a leg either way and Niz has MX sliders built in already so you retain keycap compatibility with virtually every other keyboard on the market. No there isn't actually a huge quality differential between first-party Realforce and Niz.
>but what if i don't like mx switches and i want alps
Find the biggest dildo you can and sit on it, I guess, because Alps switches are hard to find without dismantling old keyboards and there aren't any fresh ones, keyboards or switches.
>but what if i don't want to solder anything
Buy a prebuilt or suck it up and solder in Mill-max hotswap sockets so you don't have to do it again, a Pinecil is $25 and it's the best soldering iron you'll ever buy.
>but what if i want a magnetic (hall effect/TMR keyboard)
I also like linear keyboards that have gimmick software installed. Have fun making your older games not freak the fuck out when it keeps detecting a keyboard and an Xbox 360 left stick at the same time because you bound analog input to WASD.

Also get a Madlions HE keyboard. They're a close enough clone that Wooting got super fucking pissed and tried to scrub Madlions off of the internet. Point one for huemonkeys.

ALPS' tactile switches (especially Orange) were far superior to Cherry's in terms of sound and keyfeel. Cherry Browns are just basically scratchy linears, and their heavier tactiles just feel like very stiff rubber domes. Too bad ALPS style switches went the way of the CRT.

>i want a buckling spring keyboard
You have basically two options:

>Model M from Unicomp
Minor QC issues and is debateably too expensive for what it is, but these people are the actual intellectual-property holders of the IBM Model M name and design, and are a legitimately 100% American owned, run, and manufactured business. They don't even use prison labor when they slap a Made In America sticker on it!

The Unicomp Model M suffers from still functionally being a membrane keyboard; the company has yet to figure out acceptable key rollover, but as a typer the keyboard is fine.

>New Model F from Model F Laboratories
Post is being typed from one at this moment. I greatly doubt the project runner's claims that he *can't* pre-assemble the keyboards fully before shipping out, but assembly is not a hard project even if you completely ignore instructions as you're repeatedly told by the project to not do. Full metal chassis, QMK software powering it, comes in many layouts, does not suffer Unicomp's key rollover problems, EYEWATERINGLY EXPENSIVE. KEYCAP SETS ARE CONSIDERED AN (free, admittedly) ADD-ON AND NOT A GIVEN. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ANY KEYCAPS BUT THOSE INTENDED FOR MODEL M AND MODEL F BUCKLING SPRING KEYBOARDS. THIS KEYBOARD IS INTENDED TO LAST A LIFETIME, IT IS OF AN ERA WHEN KEYBOARDS WERE EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THIS ON THE REGULAR.

The main distinction early on was that membrane keyboards wouldn't let you hold more than three keys at once and would drop one if you tried to hold a fourth key which was an issue for certain games, whereas mechanical keyboards didn't have that problem. It's no longer an issue though because the technology advanced.

If you're at all familiar with buckling springs, beam springs feel like a tightened-up buckling spring keyboard, they're very nice. It's also the only real upgrade path from a Model F, and modern keycap compatibility is an amazing sell for a beam spring keyboard.

My little USB-C vacuum-blower for standard crumb/dust/hair cleanup, using a keypuller as necessary.

When I get an old keyboard that's filthy though, I usually use a Magic Eraser (or rather my bulk pack of non-brand-name equivalents from Amazon), with warm water and dish soap (plus baking soda for more stubborn shit). Alcohol is usually only reserved for cleaning internal/mechanical parts since it can fuck with the finish of plastic and ruin paintjobs that use the wrong kinds of paint; I only use it for external cleaning to remove sticky crap (e.g. leftover adhesive residue) or as a last resort.

>having shoes is so dumb, nigerian runners can outpace you barefoot dude
missing the fucking point you dip. i have a 7g that i got in 2011 and it still works. wouldn't say flawlessly, since it developed a doubleclick on a few letters and one keycap broke, so i had to substitute, but other than that it's a tank. don't see a reason to replace it.

Ah, so they're usually dumbasses using taller keycaps meant for clicky and heavier tactile switches then.

>The Unicomp Model M suffers from still functionally being a membrane keyboard; the company has yet to figure out acceptable key rollover, but as a typer the keyboard is fine.
I wish they would figure something out. A big reason I went with a Model F is NKRO, but when it comes to keyfeel in a vacuum, I prefer the heavier and chunkier feel of Model M keys. also a more practical way to open the assembly to service the membrane that's reversible out of the box would be nice, especially since doing so would probably also fix the issue of melted plastic rivets degrading with time/heavy use. Bolt mods are dodgy and suck ass to do.

very little of these custom keyboards are used to produce anything important. most of the typing is just socially depraved people gossiping to each other online. check the struck a nerve count on this thread.

Flat out ignore blue. Even for writing they suck, cause finger fatigue, and are for hipsters and pretentious KB snobs.

Browns if you like a little push back, reds is you don't.

Balanced scissor ftw. The k740 was a masterpiece, and we will never see her like again.

Handwash the PBT keycaps in a boal of soapy water. Let it soak a bit. Pull the switches and blow the fuck out of the thing with compressed air. Wiped down everything with isopropyl alcohol, dry, reassemble.

model m. either new model m or original. buckling spring is better than probably any other keyboard design out there. clicky, feels great, basically zero misinputs ever. you have to graze the key and not press it at all for it to misinput. i've had a new model m for a couple years now, it's the best keyboard i've ever used, maybe second only to the original-ish licensed ones i used with AS400 at my first job. those were worn in, the keys were very floaty, but still had basically perfect inputs. they were used hard daily as POS terminals. i learned how to type faster than anyone else at that job at 16yo just because they were so clicky and good, i was a maybe 20wpm typist before. i credit my ability to type to a combination of outdated ass cash registers and the IBM model m design
