3 is the best by such a large margin the series won't ever be able to compete with it. 1 and 2 and the psp games flesh out the series but are a bit same-y. So probably play one then take a break. But 3 is the best they will ever do. Their follow up Ascension was on par with 1,2, GoS, CoO. The later ones are totally different.

I have yet to play the nu-GoW games but I really liked the first 3 games a lot.
One of the reason why I liked the first ones is due to how satisfying it was seeing Cratos rip enemies apart.
I remember the playing the first game when it came out and thinking how it was so unapologetically brutal but in a cool, satisfying way.
