They decided to redo the entire game engine from scratch and Riot is funding it with infinite money, and since they also sold out to Riot won't even see much profit from any sales. Why bother even releasing the game at this point, best to get paid then bail and work on your own thing later. The whole soul of the project was destroyed in the pursuit of the next big thing.
