Marika was a warmonger and mass-murderer, and going by historical standards that makes her a fucking awesome ruler.

The lore you get on her is a bit schizophrenic, not even including Radagon. The game says she realized something was wrong with the golden order and encouraged her followers to come up with solutions. Presumably when that failed she decided to shatter the Elden Ring. Then you get Gideon saying the lands between you see in the game is the way Marika wants it, and the memory of grace description implies that you are in a cycle of breaking the ring and reforming it, which likely would be by her design.
Pros
>Genocided hornsent
>Solved the undead conundrum
>Created humanity
>Won right to rule through battle
Cons
>Broke the elden ring without a clear gameplan
>Killed off, banished, or weakened the good elements of her own system
>Actually two people
If Queen Marika had died shortly after establishing the golden order she would be remembered as the greatest ruler of all time in the lands between, but she lived on to ruin everything she created.

And she also completely flattened the nation that was unkind to her people.
She protected her own people's interests as much as possible.
I think Queen Marika was solid.

She headed a society that was essentially lead by unguided contempt, resentment, and revenge. This plus not allowing people to die meant that time could not heal pain. She just created hell.

Maybe for the hornsent.
But you do see that the capital city is reasonably large, so there must have been a theoretical golden age at one point in time where shit was bitchin.

If I understand you, you're saying it probably was pretty good for some people at some point in the past. Weak argument. She created hell for everyone with any amount of awareness greater than a beast's.

I still don't understand what actually changed with the elden ring being shattered. I understand it as Marika, who is the embodiment of reality, trying to kill herself, taking everyone with her.

Everything Marika and her Golden Order tried to destroy came back to haunt them forever. Was it like that before the shattering?

The golden order (the artificial law imprinted on the elden ring not the society) is that when people 'die', since they're immortal this is when their body or mind are damaged beyond repair, such people can offer themselves to the erdtree's roots so their runes can be recycled to newly born creatures. The elden ring being shattered makes this kind of passing impossible, hence why above-ground graves throughout the map are filled with undead and corpses with runes on them.

Well I'll admit I'm kinda lost with you there too.
Obviously shit like the misbegotten revolt is just kicking off and it's a fucking awful time, but before the shattering there must have been a reason people chose to stay there instead of some fucking off, so it must've been prosperous under her rule.
My best guess is that the shattering fucked everything up in the most "the flow of time is convoluted" kind of way where the newly made shitfest of reality.
Considering Caelid used to be a nice place before the shattering, whatever went wrong in Marika's head was a mistake.
