They are 100% adding a free update to Mario Kart World as a cross promotion with the release of DK Bananza, that will include at least costumes for DK and Pauline and Young Pauline as a new playable character. Maybe, if we are lucky, Diddy, Dixie or Cranky as playable characters.

I wonder if they will continue releasing free DLC for MKW troughout the switch lifetime or is just at the start to get people to buy it and justify the increased price.

I dont know if they will release more free updates in the future to coincide with the release of other games set in the Mario universe, but I doubt it.

They will do small promotion updates free of charge occasionally and later release one big paid expansion which adds new tracks and a bigger number of playable characters at once.
Anything else makes no sense.
The number of people who would pay for super specific character packs is kinda low and them just singleing out DK and Pauline like that hints at them doing themed drops and not some kind of Season Pass thing.
